Yes in the News: Seniors Getting Heat for the Holidays!
Thursday, December 29th, 2011Yes! Air Conditioning & Plumbing has been helping seniors in the community by providing free services. While most only need routine maintenance and simple repairs, one old couple needed a complete new furnace, which Yes! installed completely free of charge! Here is a video clip about it from Fox 5 News: Seniors Get Heat for the Holidays. And here is what they wrote about our program:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Volunteer heating professionals have been lending their support to elderly residents throughout the holiday season.
Under a program by Yes! Air Conditioning and Plumbing, the volunteers give their time installing and repairing heating units and solutions in the Las Vegas area.
The Heat for the Holidays program, in conjunction with Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, is helping people like Gwendolyn Taylor, a wheelchair-bound senior who has been using her stove for heat, organizers said.
Tuesday, volunteers installed a heating unit for Taylor.
In addition to installation and repairs, the program provides full inspections, home winterization and other products and services to keep the older members of the population warm throughout the winter months.

Whether you have a Menorah or a Christmas tree in your house, we wish you very happy holiday. And since one of the great traditions of this time of year is delicious food, here is a recipe we found for Crispy Potato Pancakes:
Crispy Potato Pancakes
“Here’s a potato pancake that doesn’t take much time to make and is just right for two people. Weekends become our time to relax and enjoy life, and this is one of our favorite treats. -Nancy Salinas, Grand Rapids, Minnesota”
INGREDIENTS:
2 medium potatoes, peeled
1 egg
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
vegetable oil
DIRECTIONS:
- Finely grate potatoes; drain any liquid. Place potatoes in a bowl. Add egg, onion, flour, salt, pepper and garlic powder; mix well. In a large skillet, heat 1/8 in. of oil over medium heat. Drop batter by 1/4 cupfuls; press lightly to flatten. Fry until golden brown on both sides. Serve immediately.

We hope you all have a great holiday and enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving feast! And if you are looking for some dessert ideas, here is a recipe for pumpkin pie from allrecipes.com that will make today a little sweeter:
“A mixture of fresh pumpkin puree, brown sugar, spices, evaporated milk and eggs is poured into a prepared pie crust and baked. ”
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 sugar pumpkin
- 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single crust pie
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
- 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
DIRECTIONS:
- Cut pumpkin in half and remove seeds. Place cut side down on a cookie sheet lined with lightly oiled aluminum foil. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the flesh is tender when poked with a fork. Cool until just warm. Scrape the pumpkin flesh from the peel. Either mash, or puree in small batches in a blender. Increase oven temperature to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C.)
- In a large bowl, slightly beat eggs. Add brown sugar, flour, salt, 2 cups of the pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, and evaporated milk. Stir well after each addition.
- Pour mixture into the unbaked pastry shell. Place a strip of aluminum foil around the edge of the crust to prevent over browning.
- Bake 10 minutes at 450 degrees F (230 degrees C), then reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake an additional 40 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Remove the strip of foil about 20 minutes before the pie is done so that the edge of the crust will be a light golden brown. Cool pie, and refrigerate overnight for best flavor.
